Nothing is good or bad, but by comparison.

This statement, first said almost four hundred years ago, couldn’t be any more true today. And it is particularly true about your window replacement. Sure there are shady window companies and ones that have revolutionised customer service with their high standards of excellence. But overall, whether you’re replacing your windows, buying a new car or trying out a new restaurant your experiences and opinions will be entirely subjective.

That isn’t to say they’re worthless. In fact, a smart buyer like yourself (you are taking the time to educate yourself after all) can use these subjective opinions to your advantage, to decide which companies you should or shouldn’t get a quote from.

Just like potential customers, we spend quite a bit of time doing research on Canadian window companies. Why? Because while Calgary homeowners are happy with their custom window solutions in different ways, when they are unhappy it tends to be for all the same reasons. Doing research helps us identify common areas of concern, and hopefully improve on them in our business so that we don’t make the same mistakes as other companies do.

So today we are reviewing two preferred window brands among Calgary residents – Lux Windows and Gienow (now part of Ply Gem).

    Lux Windows Calgary

    ABOUT
Lux Windows and Glass has been in business since 1969. The company has their own manufacturing facility and produces durable windows for Calgary homes. They specialise in renovation and new construction projects.

    PRODUCT
Besides the standard range of window design options (PVC windows), the company also offers aluminum clad casement and awning windows. For the pickiest customers, there are also hybrid vinyl-aluminum windows. The company also provides a variety of choices in privacy glass, Low-E coating, and customisation options.

    CERTIFICATIONS

    • CSA certified and Energy Star rated
    • 2013 SAM Awards Winner: Supplier of Best Products

    WARRANTY
Lux Windows offers a twenty-five-year window warranties on its sealed units, frame, sash and hardware components. The company also offers a five-year warranty on labour or issues related to the installation.

Overall Lux has very positive homeowner reviews. Some recent negative feedbacks expressed frustration with the poor quality of customer service and communication with the office. This may be a good company for you if you have some specific ideas about glazing options, as this is one of the few window companies in western Canada that manufacture their own glass.

Gienow Windows (now part of PlyGem)

    ABOUT
Established in 1947, Gienow is one of the oldest functioning window installation services in Alberta. The company operates a manufacturing plant in Calgary and services most of Western Canada.

    PRODUCT
The company carries all the standard residential window types in vinyl. They also carry aluminum clad wood windows. For customers with budget options, Gienow carries two different lines of windows, with different performance ratings. The company also manufactures and installs a variety of patio and entry doors.

    CERTIFICATIONS

    • Canadian Home Builders Association Calgary member
    • Energy Star Rated

    WARRANTY
Gienow being part of Ply Gem offers a window warranty for twenty years. As professional window installers in Calgary, the company has little to no questions when it comes to warranty issues, offering a great customer service if any issues arise.

Gienow is a perfect example of the subjectivity of online reviews. The customer ratings on Homestars run across the map from 0s to 10s. This doesn’t necessarily put them in a bad category, as true origins and motivations behind online reviews in general are often questionable. Most often, customers cite issues with the product itself, or problems as a result of improper window installation.

To a potential window customer this may pose quite a dilemma. Do you go for great product with potential service issues, or do you risk going for a lesser product with excellent service? Ideally you would want both, but nothing in this world is perfect.

We’ve taken great strides in the last couple of years to address the issues we had with our windows Calgary service requests. By working with our clients, we’ve learned that the happiest customers aren’t the ones without any problems, they’re the ones that feel like the company has taken care of them.

    F.A.Q.

Lux and Gienow offer distinct styles and technologies in their windows. Lux is known for its innovative designs and energy efficiency, while Gienow prides itself on durability and a wide range of customisation options. Both are reputable in Calgary’s market.

Both Lux and Gienow provide professional installation services in Calgary. Lux is often praised for its quick and efficient installation process, whereas Gienow is recognised for its meticulous attention to detail and customer service during installation.

Choosing between a local company and a national brand depends on your specific needs. Companies like Ecoline or Lux offer a local perspective with tailored solutions for Calgary’s climate. In contrast, global brands come with various product series for easier replacement projects.

Gienow Windows is operated by Ply Gem, a leading manufacturer in North America.

Customer reviews generally highlight Lux’s modern design and energy efficiency, while Gienow is often commended for its durability and customisation options. Both brands receive positive feedback and are reliable.
