Spring is in full swing, and with it the dreaded chore of spring cleaning. Windows are no different from your front yard or eaves trough, and will require some attention from you.
But the great thing about modern vinyl windows, is that they are virtually maintenance free and aren’t a hassle to clean or maintain.
This is also one of the main reasons Canadian window manufacturers have begun making windows out of vinyl. It doesn’t allow stains to permeate and doesn’t change shape or colour from moisture exposure.
Cleaning Vinyl Window Frames
Often vinyl windows can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap. There are vinyl specific cleaners on the market, but most of the time soap and a soft brush will do just fine. In general, refrain from using harsh chemical agents as the can erode or discolour the vinyl. When cleaning the frames make sure to remove or open the sashes, and take off the screen. With a wet, soapy cloth clean around the inside of the frame, and the track on which operable sashes move. You can use a soft brush for harder stains or stuck on debris.
This is also a good time to clean and lubricate any of the hinges on casement, awning windows, or swinging doors.
Cleaning Window Glass
There are different methods and products that you can use to clean the glass. Some suggestions include using a microfiber cloth or newspaper. There is also a plethora of streak-free glass, cleaners on the market. Eco-friendly homeowners may also consider using a solution of water and vinegar.
In short, there are a lot of ways to get a squeaky clean glass. What’s more important is that the chemicals used aren’t harmful enough to weaken the structural integrity of the glass, or any coatings on it.
